A renovation and densification strategy for Grand'Mare in Rouen, where buildings marked for demolition become a material resource for a new productive and domestic ecosystem.

Tiroir de Tailleur addresses the carbon emissions embedded in the production and transport of construction materials by treating Rouen's imminent demolitions as an urban quarry. Components salvaged from different buildings are catalogued, processed and recombined at Grand'Mare, producing a multi-sampled architecture that preserves fragments of the city's declining industrial landscape.
The existing complex is gradually transformed into a self-sufficient processing plant. Each phase creates the spatial and technical conditions for the next: recovered material enters the site, is sorted and refined, and returns as new architectural elements. Once the main construction is complete, the plant continues to manufacture furniture from urban salvage, supplying both the project and other interventions across the city.
Computational tools negotiate the large quantity of heterogeneous data carried by this material inventory. Optimization and evolutionary algorithms test arrangements of incompatible fragments, turning variation and uncertainty into a generative design method rather than obstacles to standardization.
Production and inhabitation form a single ecosystem. Workshops, storage, exhibition and retail occupy the lower level, while housing above is organized through relationships between domestic objects. Distances between beds, tables, kitchens, storage and shared facilities generate a deformable spatial matrix able to adapt to the irregular architecture below. The inhabitants become active participants in a cycle based on salvaging, remaking, inhabiting and selling.
